Cornwall’s Jayne Kirkham is number 3 on Labour’s South West list for Euro elections – join the campaign now!

Cornwall councillor Jayne Kirkham, from Falmouth, is number three on Labour's list of European Parliament candidates for the South West region.

It is thought to be the highest-ever ranking for any Labour Party activist from Cornwall - but Ms Kirkham still faces a formidable challenge. Labour has reasonable expectations of getting its first two choices elected - but it will take a huge campaign effort, and possibly some tactical support from other parties, if Ms Kirkham is to get elected to Brussels and Strasbourg. She is a strong supporter of a second Brexit referendum and spoke recently at a rally in Truro.

Defending MEP Clare Moody, from Wiltshire, is top of Labour's list and the Labour peer Andrew Adonis, a former head of policy for Tony Blair, is number two. Educated at an Oxfordshire boarding school, and then Oxford University, his connections to the SW region are not obvious - but he is a leading campaigner for another Brexit referendum.

Jayne Kirkham was Labour's 2017 Parliamentary candidate for the Truro & Falmouth constituency. She is now deputy leader of the Labour group on Cornwall Council.

Fourth is Neil Guild, from Taunton, a member of Labour's SW regional board. Exeter councillor Yvonne Atkinson is number five and Sadik Al-Hassan, a Labour activist from Avon, is sixth.

Great attention is now being focussed on Labour's manifesto for the European Parliament elections, particularly in relation to the national conference policy of having a second Brexit referendum, or confirmatory vote, to avoid the catastrophic consequences of a "no deal" exit from the EU.

Talks in Parliament between Tory and Labour frontbenches are due to resume next week.  If the European Parliament elections go ahead, polling will be on 23rd May.

  1. I really can’t see the point in holding EU elections. When rightly or wrongly we are leaving the EU. Also I realise that our local MP is a waste of space and not delivered on the OUT vote ( I voted to stay IN Europe but I ACCEPT THE VOTE it’s called democracy) and he’s a CON servative. So why on earth should I even bother to vote ? It all seems a waste of my time and energy to be honest!?
